"In 1997, Barry Le Va asked - and not without irony - if it meant he had finally become a contemporary artist when Saul Ostrow remarked that "the critical language for your work has just caught up with the work.” Critics have sometimes failed to demonstrate the extent to which an irreducible quality has been constant in Le Va's work, whether in relation to artists groups - his work stems from both the east and west coast art scenes; or as regards tendencies - in turn his work calls to mind conceptual art, anti-form, performance and body art; or concerning the art world itself - he has been a continual presence since the end of the 1960's and yet remains largely unknown to the general public.
Le Va, it must be said, likes paradoxes. His interviews are rare but often extensive; his writings are descriptive, but not explanatory; his scrapbooks show his working methods, but are not easy browsing. The few interviews he has given over the years, the collages he recently exhibited in Geneva, and the notes he has published in various magazines and catalogues represent, however, the only first-hand information about his working practices. It therefore seems useful to bring together a collection of material that might seem heterogeneous for a different artist, but which for Le Va constitutes, in line with a favourite metaphor of his, so many pieces of a jigsaw puzzle where there is no guarantee that it is complete."
