The Kitchen Toto is set in Kenya at the time of the Mau Mau uprising. A white police inspector takes into his household as junior kitchen helper (or kitchen toto) a small black boy whose father has been killed as part of the Emergency. The film explores the relationship between the kitchen toto and the inspector’s son, and the effect of a particular phase in colonial history.
