Published by William Heinemann, London 1913. First Edition. 26.6cm H x 20cm W (10 1/2” x 8”). Olive coloured linen boards with gilt lettering and motif to the front, dark green titles to the spine. Heavy cream coloured paper. 44pp plus 44 tipped in colour plates under captioned tissue guards. Numerous pen & ink illustrations to the text. Introduction by Sir Arthur Quiller Couch. With an Arthur Rackham pictorial bookplate printed on front endpaper (left out of later editions).
Book condition: Very Good. No dust jacket. Neat pasted repair to the front inside hinge (historic); Spine & corners are bumped & rubbed; Ghost of previous owner’s bookplate on front pastedown and opposite (recto) page; Slight foxing to some of the guards. Plates are in very good condition, with the exceptions of #30 (2 small creases in bottom LH corner) & #37 (missing a small area of colour).
A collection of interesting & beautiful illustrations with scenes of Edwardian children as well as the fantastical. Interesting to see the influence of the Japanese illustrative style on some of the works.
