A lovely first collected volume of poetry by Jenifer Wayne:
“Yet here with hair as white as may
Sits one for whom the tended day
And limpet-gentle lees of life
Score deeper cuts than any knife;
Here her crystal gaze detests
All Mod. Cons. in which she rests
Lethal rosebud cups and bright
Chintz of noon, grimmer than night;
Here her freckled hands lie pale
And clutch for the soil under the nail;
Here her grand and grievous lust
Knows itself, and puts its trust
In nothing but the faith that dust
Falls in good time. Is this not rectitude?
She shines. You cannot leave her. She makes light
That follows and precedes you all your way
Once you have caught breath on the rare twig of her
Star-tree smile. You are right:
Saints have no hope: that is their saintliness;
The radiant ball will work the walls of the cave,
By staying sublimely still, to be translucent:
This negative an act
Of pure power, and simply
Not to put out the light an outwardness
That lights the world.”
