'Anacaona grants a private audience with one of Cuba's first ladies of song: step up to the veranda, sip a mojito or two, and listen to Alicia Castro's story of the jazz orchestra who thrilled listeners and broke hearts across the world. In this evocative memoir, Alicia Castro - now in her eighties, but only twelve years old when she first took to the stage with her sisters - looks back on the dazzling world of the dance band. The girls appeared with jazz greats including Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway, played for presidents, princesses and Hollywood celebrities, and were showered with critical praise, designer dresses and jewels. And although the arrival of Fidel Castro in 1959 made Cuba's creative life significantly more difficult, the headstrong sisters continued to perform well into their old age.
