“The Yorkshire Dales are an area of the Penines that have a character all of their own – not just because of the diverse scenery but also because of the people that live there.
The landscape is one of contrasting elements. Open fells, with a number of individual peaks, are intersected by narrow valleys, while beneath the surface lies a vast system of caverns and connecting passageways, many of which remain unexplored. Water cuts its way down fell sides to form gills, becks and falls in karst areas, where limestone predominates, it frequently disappears underground to reappear somewhere completely different. Though settled and farmed, the individual dales are remote and cut-off, hence the character of the people, steadfast and independent, resourceful and shy; yet at the same time they form a close-knit, loyal and supportive society.
It is this aspect of the Dales life as much as the beauty of the landscape with its steady lines and soft grey colouring, and the wonder of the caves that ‘Open Fell Hidden Dale’ portrays through a series of 93 black and white photographs by John and Eliza Forder, with complimentary text by Dr Arthur Raistrick.”
