Life in Yorkshire takes on a distinctly yellow hue as Le Tour de France begins its first stage on Saturday 5th July... Excitement seems to be coursing through everyone’s veins, creeping into even the most dour of northern characters as cycling fever becomes contagious. Harrogate, chosen as the finish for the first day, is a conservative town, variously described as stuffy and snobby, has taken on a younger, buoyant, a more optimistic outlook. Yellow bikes, woollen bunting (eeh it’s Yarkshire tha knows) in the shape of mini cycling shirts, Union Jacks, Tricolours and the county flag of Yorkshire – a white rose on a blue ground are to be seen everywhere. Throughout all the people, traffic, barriers and buildings, are many swiftly peddled, cruising or static bicycles of all ages, shapes, prices and colours. Whatever the outcome of these few days of the Grand Depart, the abiding memory for the visitors should be the enthusiasm and warmth of the Yorkshire people and the variety of stunning scenery the county has to offer. Treasure & Relish take this opportunity to wish all competitors the best of luck - and to thank everyone involved with organising this event which has brought people together, and lifted the sprits of many....
