William Etty: Art & Controversy Exhibition 25th June 2011 until 22nd January 2012 York Art Gallery.
William Etty: Art & Controversy is the first major exhibition to focus on the York born artist William Etty R.A. (1787-1849) in over fifty years. Featuring major loans from Tate, the Royal Academy, the National Trust, Manchester Art Gallery and works from York Art Gallery’s Collection, it examines how Etty’s paintings, especially those of the nude female body, courted controversy and often provoked vicious attacks in the press.
