No dust jacket. Prefatory note from Arthur Rackham detailing new illustrations and re-workings of earlier drawings (identifiable by duel dates ‘98 & ‘07) for this new edition. The illustrations comprising of 24 coloured drawings (complete with captioned tissue guards), 12 tinted illustrations, and 66 line drawings, accompany the text. Green cloth boards with gilt lettering and picture to the upper cover and spine. Gilt top edges. Illustrated end-papers.
Condition: Very Good. Side and bottom edges have some foxing; Foxing on the title page, but very little elsewhere; Closed tear with no loss to page 359; Spine is slightly bumped; Extremities a little rubbed; Faint impression of an earlier owner’s bookplate; Text clean, bright and tight; All pages present.
A beautiful and profusely illustrated example of Rackham’s artistry. An essential title for any serious collector of illustrated works. The popular ‘Legends’ written by Richard Harris Barham under the pseudonym of Thomas Ingoldsby were originally published during the mid-nineteenth century in Bentley’s Miscellany. Rackham followed several other noted artists of the time in discovering the employment and earning potential from illustrating the popular ‘Legends’, which to the pleasure of the general public, were published many times during the nineteenth century and beyond.
