Dark brown cloth covered boards with gilt and black titles & illustrations that include: a steam train crossing a trestle bridge, a native American on horseback, George Washington, Niagra Falls; Gilt page edges – top, bottom & side; Tissue guard over title page. Condition: Outer boards clean, though with a short split (1”) between front board and the spine, a longer split (2 ½”) between the rear board and the spine; Worn at the top and bottom of the spine; Corners a little bumped & worn; Inside the hinges have broken separating the textblock from the covers; Previous owners inscription dated 1883; Light foxing to the endpapers; All pages are present, clean and bright, and with no tears.
Reverend Manning’s thoughtful text, full of history and observations which chart his travels around the country, is supported with around 224 pen and pencil drawings covering many aspects of the American landscape, architecture and life. American Pictures presents a wonderful and lavishly illustrated record from the perspective of the latter part of the nineteenth century, and looked at today around 130 years later, presents a fascinating book.
