A much loved book with an appealing record of ownership  

“From ‘Emma Davenport’ to her most affectionate child Dora Davenport 1870, aged 12 yrs”. Flyleaf (Frontis verso), inscription written by two hands around the name ‘Emma Davenport’.

Published in London by J. Harris And Son, Corner Of St. Paul’s Church-Yard, 1822. First Edition. 16mo. Approx 6 ¾”x 4 ¼” (17cm H x 11cm W). ii (first two pages unpaginated), 200pp. Quarter bound in leather, blue pictorial boards – front possibly an easel (as titlepage), rear has motif of ‘Harris & Son’s Original Juvenile Library’ – being an engraving of St. Paul’s Cathedral. Illustrated – 12 b&w engravings, inc frontis; Printer statement on t.p. verso: "Printed by S & R. Bentley, ...London". Dedication dated "Jan. 1821," and typesigned: M.E.B. [Maria Elizabeth Budden]; Plates dated "Decr. 1, 1822."

Condition: Used. Good. Outer is worn and rubbed; Corners chipped, loss of top paper; Page edges dust stained. Inside is age tanned and discoloured; Owner’s name in ink, with inscription in pencil; Frontis and the other illustrations have been coloured in by a child (Dora?); Tear with loss to the title page; Much age spotting and marking, despite this the pages are tight and bright.
